What is Sunburn?
Skin redness and pain caused by excessive UV exposure
UVB damages skin cells; severe cases may cause blistering and peeling.
Main causes & characteristics
Sunburn is acute light damage in which UVB mainly damages the DNA of epidermal cells, triggering an inflammatory response that leaves the skin red, hot, and painful. It usually appears several hours after exposure, peaks at 24–48 hours, and in severe cases can be accompanied by blistering, chills, and peeling. Repeated sunburn is known to contribute to photoaging and the accumulation of skin damage.
How to manage
Moving to shade or indoors right away and cooling the heat with lukewarm water or a cold compress, then lightly caring for the skin with soothing, moisturizing products containing aloe or panthenol, can help. During recovery, plenty of fluid intake and low-irritation moisturizing are generally recommended. If blisters form over a wide area or you have fever or severe pain, consulting a medical provider is recommended.
Good to know alongside
UVB and UVA, SPF and PA ratings, photoaging, and blister care are often mentioned together. Recovering skin is more sensitive to UV, so further exposure should be avoided.
Everyday care tips
When the skin peels, it is best not to pull it off forcibly but to let it fall away naturally. Reduce outdoor activity between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. when UV is strong.
