What is Acne?
A common skin condition caused by excess sebum, clogged pores, and inflammation
Manifests as comedones, papules, pustules, and more. Hormonal changes, stress, and diet are contributing factors.
Caution
Severe inflammatory acne may need professional care from a dermatologist.
Main causes & characteristics
Acne is generally understood to arise from excess sebum production, a thickened buildup of dead cells that clogs the pore opening, and the added presence of Cutibacterium acnes (acne bacteria) along with inflammation. Androgen-related hormonal shifts during puberty, the menstrual cycle, or conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome can stimulate sebum production. Clogged pores show up as comedones such as whiteheads and blackheads, and when inflammation develops they can appear as papules, pustules, or nodules.
How to manage
Cleansing about twice a day with a gentle mildly acidic cleanser is common, and avoiding excessive scrubbing or physical squeezing is generally recommended since it can lead to irritation and scarring. Ingredients such as salicylic acid (BHA), niacinamide, and azelaic acid are known to help with pore care and sebum balance. If nodules or cysts keep recurring, or you are worried about scarring, consulting a dermatologist is recommended.
Good to know alongside
Choosing non-comedogenic (less pore-clogging) cosmetics, low-oil moisturizers, and sun protection are often mentioned together. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) and acne scarring can become separate follow-up concerns.
Everyday care tips
Keeping pillowcases and phone screens clean and reducing the habit of touching or squeezing your face by hand can help. Try a new product on part of the jawline first to watch how your skin reacts.
