What is Urticaria (Hives)?
An allergic reaction causing sudden wheals (raised bumps) and itching
Caused by histamine release, triggers include food, medications, and stress.
Main causes & characteristics
Hives (urticaria) is understood to be an allergic or hypersensitivity reaction in which mast cells in the skin release histamine and other mediators, causing temporary swelling (wheals) in the upper dermis along with intense itching. A characteristic feature is that individual wheals usually fade without a trace within 24 hours and then appear anew in a different area. Triggers are varied, including foods, medications, infection, pressure, temperature changes, and stress.
How to manage
Keeping a record of suspected triggers such as foods or medications and avoiding them, and soothing itchy areas with a cold compress rather than scratching, can help. Keeping the environment mild and reducing tight clothing and excessive friction is generally recommended. If shortness of breath or swelling around the lips or eyes accompanies it, it may be an emergency, and immediate medical care is needed.
Good to know alongside
Histamine, angioedema, chronic urticaria (lasting more than 6 weeks), and anaphylaxis warning signs are often mentioned together. If it recurs for more than 6 weeks, it is classified as chronic.
Everyday care tips
Noting the foods, medications taken, and circumstances on days when symptoms appear can help identify triggers. Hot baths and alcohol can increase the itching.
