What is Xerosis Cutis?

A condition of chronically dry skin with recurring flaking and itching

Occurs when the stratum corneum moisture level drops below 10%. Common in winter and among the elderly, with proper moisturizing being the key to management.

Main causes & characteristics of Xerosis Cutis

This condition is known to occur when the moisture content of the stratum corneum decreases and the skin's natural moisturizing factor (NMF) along with its lipid barrier becomes depleted. Dry winter air, frequent bathing, and reduced sebum production associated with aging are commonly cited as major contributing factors. When gaps widen between corneocytes, moisture may evaporate more easily, potentially creating a cycle that worsens dryness.

Managing Xerosis Cutis

It is generally recommended to apply a moisturizer containing ceramides, glycerin, and panthenol immediately after bathing while the skin is still slightly damp, to help seal in moisture. Rinsing briefly with lukewarm water and avoiding hot water and harsh soaps is widely advised. When scaling or itching is severe or recurrent, consulting a dermatologist is recommended.

Related information

Dry skin, stratum corneum barrier, natural moisturizing factor (NMF), and senile xerosis are commonly discussed together. The management approach is also similar to that used for atopy-prone skin.

Everyday care tips

Maintaining indoor humidity between 40–60% and using a humidifier may help relieve dryness. Wearing cotton clothing to minimize frictional irritation is also a good practice.
