What is Folliculitis?

Main causes & characteristics

Folliculitis is understood to be inflammation that occurs when bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus enter follicles damaged by shaving, friction, sweat, or occlusive clothing. Small red papules the size of millet grains, or pustules with pus in the center, appear in clusters around the follicle openings and may be accompanied by itching or stinging. Hot, humid environments, frequent hair removal, and tight workout clothes are cited as triggers.

How to manage

Keeping the area clean with lukewarm water without scratching or squeezing it, and wearing well-ventilated clothing, is generally recommended. Shaving in the direction of hair growth and adding soothing care afterward to reduce irritation can help lower the burden of recurrence. If the area is wide, accompanied by pain or fever, or recurring, consulting a dermatologist is recommended.

Good to know alongside

It looks similar to acne and keratosis pilaris and is easily confused with them, and frequent waxing and hot-tub use are also cited as related factors. Squeezing it yourself can leave scarring and pigmentation, so caution is needed.

Everyday care tips

Changing out of sweaty clothes quickly and showering after exercise can help. Using separate razors and towels and replacing them often is advisable.
