What is Asteatotic Eczema?
A form of eczema where severe dryness causes cracking and redness of the skin
Characterized by a cracked, dried-riverbed pattern, commonly found on the shins. Worsens in dry indoor environments during winter.
Main causes & characteristics of Asteatotic Eczema
This form of eczema is known to develop when excessive loss of moisture and sebum from the skin surface weakens the barrier, producing dry, cracked, reddened skin resembling a parched riverbed. Frequent hot baths, harsh soaps, low humidity, and reduced sebum production associated with aging are cited as aggravating factors. It most commonly appears on areas with naturally low sebum levels, such as the shins.
Managing Asteatotic Eczema
Bathing briefly in lukewarm water with a mildly acidic cleanser, and applying moisturizer generously while the skin is still slightly damp immediately after bathing, is recommended. Barrier-supporting ingredients such as ceramides and glycerin are known to help reduce cracking. If itching or cracking is severe or persists for a long time, consulting a dermatologist is recommended.
Related information
The skin barrier, transepidermal water loss (TEWL), dry skin, atopic dermatitis, and barrier-restoring moisturizers (ceramides and glycerin) are commonly discussed alongside this condition. Its association with dry winter environments is frequently noted.
Everyday care tips
Maintaining adequate indoor humidity with a humidifier, and patting the skin dry gently rather than rubbing vigorously with a rough towel, may help.
