What is Oily Skin?

Skin characterized by active sebum production, shine, and enlarged pores

Excess sebum production centered on the T-zone (forehead, nose), prone to acne and blackheads.

Key characteristics

Oily skin has the characteristic of large, active sebaceous glands and a high amount of sebum production, and genetics, hormones, and hot, humid environments play a role. Shine and enlarged pores stand out centered on the T-zone such as the forehead and nose, and when dead cells and bacteria are added to excess sebum, blackheads and comedones tend to form. That said, having lots of sebum does not mean the skin is well hydrated.

How to manage

Cleansing gently twice a day with a mildly acidic gel or foam cleanser, while avoiding over-cleansing since it can actually trigger excess sebum, is advisable. Balancing oil and water with a light hydrating gel or lotion, and salicylic acid (BHA) or niacinamide, is known to help with pore and sebum care. Products labeled oil-free and non-comedogenic are generally recommended.

Good to know alongside

It needs to be distinguished from dehydrated oily skin, and BHA and clay ingredients are often mentioned together in pore, blackhead, and acne care.

Everyday care tips

When shine bothers you during the day, pressing with blotting paper and replenishing only water with a light mist can help reduce sebum-triggering irritation.
