A lack of water in the skin independent of oil levels — a concept distinct from dry skin type
Even oily skin can be dehydrated (oily-dehydrated). This is a state of increased transepidermal water loss (TEWL).
Main causes & characteristics of Dehydration
Dehydrated skin refers to a condition where moisture alone is lacking inside the skin, regardless of oil levels — meaning it can also occur in oily skin types (commonly known as oily-dehydrated skin). It is known that when transepidermal water loss (TEWL) increases due to cold air, indoor heating, excessive cleansing, or a compromised skin barrier, the sensation of dryness from within becomes more pronounced.
Managing Dehydration
It is generally recommended to replenish moisture with humectant ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and panthenol, then seal in that moisture with oils and ceramides to prevent evaporation. Cleansing briefly with lukewarm water and reducing excessive exfoliation may also help. If a persistent tight, dry feeling continues, consulting a dermatologist is recommended.
Related information
Oily-dehydrated skin (skin with excess sebum but moisture-deficient beneath the surface), skin barrier damage, and transepidermal water loss (TEWL) are commonly discussed together.
Everyday care tips
Since moisturizing before flaking occurs is key, applying a hydrating product while the skin is still slightly damp immediately after cleansing is a habit that may be beneficial.
