PHA (polyhydroxy acid), represented by ingredients such as gluconolactone and lactobionic acid, has a larger molecular size than AHAs, so it stays on the surface of the keratin layer and works slowly — a characteristic feature. Because the molecules are large, penetration is gentle, so it is known to be on the low-irritation side. At the same time it has humectant properties that draw in water, combining dead-cell tidying with a moisturizing function.
How to manage
Starting at a low concentration 2–3 times a week and adjusting the frequency while watching how your skin reacts is generally recommended. Finishing with a moisturizer afterward, and spacing out its use from other acidic ingredients or high-concentration vitamin C since the irritation can overlap, is advisable. If stinging or redness persists, it is safer to stop using it.
