What is Vitamin A / Beta-Carotene?
A fat-soluble nutrient and antioxidant carotenoid important for skin and mucous membrane health
Beta-carotene converts to vitamin A in the body and is important for skin turnover and health maintenance. Rich in carrots, sweet potatoes, and spinach.
Caution
Excessive supplement intake may cause carotenemia (skin yellowing) or toxicity risks. Follow recommended doses.
Characteristics & nutrition facts
Beta-carotene is a carotenoid abundant in yellow-red vegetables such as carrots and pumpkin, and it is a provitamin A that is converted into vitamin A (retinol) in the body as much as needed. Vitamin A is known to be involved in the normal differentiation of epithelial cells and the maintenance of mucosal and skin turnover, and beta-carotene itself also plays an antioxidant role. Being fat-soluble, its absorption increases when taken with fat.
How to manage
The beta-carotene form is converted to vitamin A only as needed, so it is on the comparatively low-burden side, and taking it with a meal that includes fat can help with absorption. High doses of retinol (preformed vitamin A) require caution in pregnant women and others, so professional consultation is recommended over arbitrary high-dose intake. Smokers are advised to be cautious with high-dose beta-carotene supplementation.
Good to know alongside
It is mentioned together with other carotenoids such as lutein and lycopene, and it is a separate pathway from topical retinoids. If skin changes are severe or persist, consulting a dermatologist is recommended.
Everyday care tips
Lightly cooking carrots, spinach, and kabocha in oil can help with absorption, and eating a variety of colorful vegetables lets you naturally replenish carotenoids.
