Every spring, the number of people reporting skin concerns surges. March–May, when yellow dust, fine dust, and pollen all peak at once, is especially harsh on the barrier. Skin already dried out over winter becomes more vulnerable to spring irritation.
Spring skin irritants
Yellow dust
Fine particles blown from the dry regions of northern China and Mongolia, containing heavy metals (lead, cadmium, chromium) and harmful microbes. The very small particle size penetrates deep into pores and triggers oxidative stress and inflammatory responses.
Fine dust (PM2.5 and below)
Ultrafine particles from car exhaust, factory fumes, etc. Research shows they directly cause oxidative stress in skin cells and worsen acne, dermatitis, and pigmentation.
Pollen
Along with allergic rhinitis, it can trigger skin allergic reactions (itching, hives, contact dermatitis). Exposure to pollen with an already-damaged barrier makes reactions more severe.
Spring skin defense routine
1. Strengthen cleansing
Cleanse immediately when you get home after going out. Minimizing the time yellow dust/fine dust stays on skin is key. If you wore makeup, double cleanse — oil cleanser first, then foam cleanser.
But in the morning, excessive cleansing isn't needed. Cleanse lightly with water or a mild cleanser. Maintaining the barrier helps you defend against daytime irritation better.
2. Strengthen the physical barrier — sunscreen + base makeup
Sunscreen, foundation, and BB cream create a physical barrier between skin and external irritants. Even applying a light base when going out is better than going bare-skinned.
3. Use antioxidants
Antioxidants are effective against the oxidative stress caused by yellow dust/fine dust.
- Vitamin C (morning): antioxidant + photoaging prevention
- Vitamin E: antioxidant synergy with vitamin C
- Green tea extract, resveratrol: plant antioxidants
4. Strengthen moisturizing
Dry spring weather and yellow dust pull skin moisture quickly. Moisturize well before going out and use a humidifier indoors.
5. Handling allergic skin
If you have pollen allergies, your skin becomes sensitive too.
- Reduce use of actives (retinol, high-strength AHA/BHA).
- Simplify your routine with non-irritating, simple-ingredient products.
- Oral antihistamines may help reduce skin itching and reactions.
Spring skincare checklist
- Heavy yellow dust/fine dust days: minimize going out, cleanse immediately on return
- Severe pollen allergy: simplify routine, use soothing-focused products
- Sudden redness and itching: suspect an allergic reaction, stop irritants and consult a dermatologist
- Morning cleansing: lightly with water or a mild cleanser
- Evening cleansing: double cleanse to remove fine dust
Spring skincare is about "defense" rather than "recovery." Strengthening the barrier before exposure and quickly removing residue after returning home is the most effective way to prevent trouble.
