On social media, 10-step skincare routines abound. But for those just starting skincare, or tired of complex routines, less is more. The minimal core routine dermatologists recommend is just three steps.
Why a simple routine is sometimes better
Layering many products can ① cause irritation from ingredient clashes, ② burden the barrier more than necessary, or ③ make it hard to identify which product is the problem. It's far wiser to first understand your skin with just three basic steps, then add steps one at a time as needed.
The 3-step basic routine
### Step 1: Cleanse (cleanser)
Why it matters: Removes sebum, pollutants, and sunscreen residue built up during the day. Without proper cleansing, pores clog and the absorption of subsequent products is hindered.
How to choose:
- A pH 5.0–5.5 acidic cleanser maintains the acid mantle
- Dry/sensitive: cream type, milk type
- Oily/acne-prone: gel type, foam type
- Fragrance/alcohol-free products are less irritating
Proper cleansing: Lather well with lukewarm water, massage gently for 30 seconds to 1 minute, then rinse. Hot water and strong friction cause barrier damage.
### Step 2: Moisturize (moisturizer)
Why it matters: Captures moisture that evaporates quickly after cleansing and strengthens the barrier. Even with acne or oily skin, moisturizing is essential.
How to choose:
- Dry: cream type, with ceramides/hyaluronic acid
- Oily: gel type, water cream, oil-free
- Sensitive: simple, fragrance-free ingredients, ceramide-based
Timing: Most effective applied within 3 minutes of cleansing while skin is slightly damp.
### Step 3: Sunscreen (morning only)
Why it matters: UV accounts for 80% of skin aging. No matter how well you use moisturizer and serum, you can't prevent photoaging without sun protection. If you pick one most important thing in skincare, it's sunscreen.
How to choose:
- Daily: SPF30–50 / PA+++
- Outdoor activity: SPF50+ / PA++++
- Oily skin: dry touch, oil-free
- Dry skin: sunscreen with moisturizing ingredients
Amount: A fingertip segment, or about the size of a 500-won coin. You need more than you'd think. Under-applying greatly reduces SPF effect.
3-step routine timeline
Morning
- Water rinse (or mild cleanser) → 2. Moisturizer → 3. Sunscreen
Evening
- Cleanser (double cleanse if wearing makeup/sunscreen) → 2. Moisturizer
Total time: 5 minutes morning, 3 minutes evening
When to expand the routine
After maintaining the basic 3 steps for 4+ weeks and stabilizing your skin:
- Concerned about pigmentation → add vitamin C serum or niacinamide serum
- Concerned about aging → add retinol (from low concentration)
- Concerned about acne → add BHA exfoliation (2x a week)
- Still dry → add a toner or essence
Don't try to solve everything at once. Skin takes time. Consistently keeping 3 steps is far more effective than using 10 steps irregularly.
