The most effective skincare = the cheapest skincare
One of the first things I ask patients is, "How many times a day do you touch your face?" Most answer, "I don't," but even a brief observation shows them touching their chin, nose, or mouth once a minute.
Your hands are the worst skincare tool
According to a 2015 University of New South Wales study, the average adult touches their face about 23 times per hour. Many of those touches are near the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose, and mouth. Just before that, your hands touched door handles, smartphones, and cash. The all-day transfer of bacteria, oils, and contaminants reaches its endpoint on your face.
The real price of popping pimples
Inflammation that sat on the surface spreads into the dermis the moment you press it with your fingers. The result:
- The same spot develops bigger, deeper breakouts repeatedly
- Collagen damage leads to permanent scars and pigmentation
If dermatologists could give you one piece of advice — don't pop them.
Face-touching addiction self-check
- You rest your chin on your hand when you concentrate
- You squeeze any pimple or blackhead the moment you see one
- You alternate between touching your phone and your face
Action plan
Step 1. Awareness, substitution, environment
- Stick a "No Face-Touching" sticker on your desk or mirror
- Keep hand cream or a stress ball as a 'substitute object' for your hands
- Adjust desk and monitor height so you're not tempted to rest your chin on your hand
Step 2. When you spot a pimple
- Apply a pimple patch immediately (blocks your hand and soothes)
- 10 seconds of ice to calm inflammation
- If your hands are about to touch your face, wash them for 20 seconds first
Closing thoughts
More powerful than any expensive ampoule is simply not touching your face. Just for today, count consciously. That number tells you the true state of your skin.
